# VICUÑA – The Fiber of the Gods
### The story of one of the world’s rarest and most precious fibers
Vicuña is widely regarded as one of the finest and most exclusive natural fibers in the world.
It comes from the smallest member of the South American camelid family, an extraordinary animal native to the high-altitude regions of the Andes and deeply rooted in the history and culture of the ancient Inca civilization.
For the Incas, the vicuña was considered sacred. Its exceptionally fine fleece was reserved for royalty and held such importance that the animal became a symbol of rarity, prestige and privilege.
Over the centuries, however, this precious species was pushed dangerously close to extinction. Following the Spanish conquest, vicuñas were hunted extensively for their exceptionally valuable fleece, and later became a target for poachers.
By the middle of the twentieth century, the population had fallen dramatically, prompting the introduction of strict conservation measures, protected reserves and international regulations designed to safeguard the species.
Thanks to these efforts, vicuñas now live under carefully regulated protection, particularly in the Andean regions of South America, where they can roam freely in their natural environment.
## Why is vicuña fiber so rare?
The extraordinary value of vicuña is not simply due to its history.
Each adult animal produces only a very small quantity of usable fiber, and harvesting takes place at long intervals under controlled conditions.
Approximately **100 grams of fine fiber may be obtained from one animal every two years**.
To put this rarity into perspective, the production of a single vicuña coat may require the fleece obtained from approximately **25 to 30 adult animals**.
This extremely limited availability is one of the reasons why vicuña is considered among the most precious textile fibers in existence.
## An exceptionally fine natural fiber
Vicuña fiber can measure approximately **12 microns in diameter**, making it extraordinarily fine and even thinner than some of the finest cashmere fibers.
Its remarkable fineness gives the fabric its distinctive characteristics:
exceptional softness,
a naturally refined handle,
lightness and warmth,
and a subtle, unmistakable luminosity.
These qualities have earned vicuña its legendary name:
