La vicuña: history of the most precious fabric in the world.
The finest and most exclusive textile fiber in the world derives from the smallest of the South American camelids: the vicuña.
80% of this protected species, of which today there are about 180,000 specimens, lives in the Andes, in huge farms that allow it to live in the wild. This animal, considered sacred by the Incas population, has risked extinction since 1572, a date that marks the end of the Inca Empire, in the 1970s.
The decline of this breed, which began following the Spanish colonization, was caused first by the conquistadors and then by the poachers who have persecuted this animal for centuries in order to take possession of its highly prized fleece.
In 1960 there were about 5 thousand specimens, unlike the 3 million present in the sixteenth century. Thus, between the sixties and seventies, the first attempts by the Peruvian state to safeguard this animal species began, resulting in the creation of nature reserves and the issuance of decrees regulating its killing and trade.
It was in Washington, in 1976, that the vicuña was included in Appendix I, reserved for species that need the highest degree of protection. This action, undertaken by the UN international convention that regulates the trade in endangered animals and plants, decreed the end of all forms of exploitation of the vicuña.
Numerous reasons justify the preciousness of the coat of this animal which is considered so valuable that it is even nicknamed “Fleece of the Gods”. The difficulty of finding due to the low number of existing specimens is added to the minimum quantity of wool produced by this adult animal, which is about 100 grams of fiber every two years, a minimum quantity considering that for a coat it is necessary to use the fleece of about 25-30 adult animals.
Finally, the outermost layer of hair that the vicuña. develops, has a fiber with a diameter of 12 microns, thinner than cashmere which reaches 15 µm. This makes it one of the finest fibers in the world and also justifies its soft and shiny appearance and the nickname “fiber of the gods”.
